Mezcal Copitas

What is a Mezcal Copita?

A mezcal jicara is a type of cup or bowl used for drinking mezcal, a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from the agave plant. Mezcal copitas are traditionally made from the dried shell of the jicara fruit, which is native to Mexico. They are shaped like a shallow bowl with a narrow opening at the top, and are often decorated with colorful designs and patterns. Mezcal copitas are used to sip mezcal slowly, allowing the drinker to appreciate the complex flavors and aromas of the mezcal.

Our beautiful hand carved Mezcal copitas are designed by artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico.

These jicara copitas or gourds, are first hollowed and then acrylic painted to begin the carving process.

Each cup is unique in size and design.  They are approximately 3 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches tall and come with a braided natural fiber base.  They will hold 2-3 ounces of liquid depending on size

Please note that due to the porous nature of the jicara, they will drink with you!

Rabbits - Those who ingested the agave spirits would be controlled by one of the 400 rabbits, but no one ever knew which rabbit you'd get with each mezcal.

Hummingbirds - They have long been associated with the sun, itself often portrayed as a mythological warrior - hence the bird’s close association with Huitzilopochtli.

Agave de Maguey - Mezcal is simply a spirit distilled from the agave plant. Many agave varietals grow throughout Mexico, and each plant or magueytakes on the terroir of the microclimate in which it grows, impacting a mezcal's flavor.

Dahlia - They are of Mesoamerican origin, with 41 species native to Mexico. Their original Nahuatl name, acocoxochitl, comes from the words a-ti (water), coco-tli (tube) and xochitl (flower), for a word meaning ‘flower of hollow stems with water.’ Most wild species are in central Mexico, and they were historically grown in the area of what is today Mexico City.

 Jicaras are drinking vessels made out of gourds that come after the calabash fruit is carved out, leaving the shell which is hung to dry. The resulting vessel is known as a jicara which is the Spanish word for cup.  Not just for mezcal, they can be used as a tequila cup or for any kind of beverage, even as a small bowl for serving food.
